American Sign Language Ministry

The American Sign Language (ASL) Ministry provides spiritual support, accessibility, respect and cultural sensitivity to all congregational members who are Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Oral and Hearing. Bradley United Methodist Church respects the linguistic and cultural richness of both ASL and English as natural human languages.

Accessibility

Bradley UMC believes church worship should be accessible to all people. To fulfill this commitment, church services are interpreted Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Upon request, Interpreters can be arranged for other Church activities. There is a TTY available in the church office. We recently added ASL and Deaf Culture videos to our Library.

Leadership

The ASL Ministry pledges to support any individual who feels called to pursue a position of leadership within the church. Support services are in place to guarantee total accessibility to all aspects of church life, including leadership opportunities.

Teaching

Deaf members can become cultural brokers to help facilitate understanding of the linguistic similarities and differences of ASL and English. Teaching is an avenue to accomplish this goal. Many hearing people want to learn ASL. The best teacher of ASL is not one who is hearing, but Deaf. A Bilingual/Bicultural approach to teaching ASL has proven quite successful as we have learned from our friends at the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD), who are leaders in deaf education. Bradley UMC has an ASL/Deaf culture video library that has books of the Bible, and other resources, on videotape.

Interpreting

The ASL Ministry at Bradley UMC supports students in the Vincennes University ASL Program and the IUPUI ASL/English Interpreting Program. Two of our interpreters are graduates from both of these respected programs.

The ASL Ministry encourages ASL and ITP (Interpreter Training programs) students to visit Greenfield, IN for lab and contact hours needed to fulfill academic requirements. Practicum opportunities are also available.

There are over 860,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing residents of Indianapolis and an interpreter ratio of 1/624. Bradley UMC realizes additional qualified and certified interpreters are needed in our community.

The ASL Ministry acknowledges ICRID (Indiana Chapter of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf) for its role in providing interpreter training and continuing educational opportunities for all Indiana interpreters and transliterators.
